Thirty-five and under: A Line in the Sand 35岁以下:界限之线

Mixed media

This mixed media series examines the societal and workplace pressures surrounding the “35 and under” phenomenon

in China, with a special focus on the unique challenges faced by women. Women are often expected to marry and

have children before the age of 30, with 35 marking a symbolic and societal deadline for career advancement and

motherhood. The project captures the emotional toll of balancing career aspirations with cultural norms, the stigma

of being labeled “leftover women” if unmarried, and the workplace discrimination women face due to fears around

maternity leave and childbearing. Through a blend of surrealism and realism, the artworks delve into themes of gender inequality, societal judgment, and the resilience of women navigating these expectations.

This work aims to raise awareness of the unique pressures women face in this age-related phenomenon, sparking dialogue about gender equity, workplace inclusion, and the value of personal choices beyond societal deadlines, particually in Chinese and Asian cultures.

My artistic approach has evolved from a more traditional foundation to a contemporary style, drawing influence from the dreamlike distortions of Salvador Dalí and the raw, expressive energy of Ralph Steadman. These inspirations shape the visual language of this series, allowing me to challenge perceptions and spark dialogue about gender

equity, workplace inclusion, and the value of personal choices beyond societal deadlines, particularly in Chinese and Asian cultures.
